Family Decision Guide
How to Choose an Assisted Living Facility in Texas
Choosing the right community is one of the most important decisions a family makes. Use this checklist to compare communities on what actually matters — and to ask the right questions on every tour.

Start with Texas licensing
Every legitimate assisted living community in Texas is licensed by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) under Health & Safety Code Chapter 247 and Texas Administrative Code Title 26, Chapter 553. Communities are licensed as Type A or Type B depending on residents’ ability to evacuate and their overnight care needs. Confirm the license and type first — it tells you what level of care a community is legally allowed to provide.
The Pine Lodge tour checklist
Licensing
Confirm the community is licensed by Texas HHSC and ask whether it is a Type A or Type B facility and what that means for your loved one.
Staffing
Ask about staff-to-resident ratios, overnight coverage, caregiver training, and turnover.
Care plans
Ask how each resident is assessed and how the plan is updated as needs change.
Medication support
Confirm who manages and administers medications and how errors are prevented.
Meals
Ask about menus, dietician oversight, special diets, and dining times.
Activities
Look for a real calendar of social, physical, and spiritual activities.
Cleanliness
Tour unannounced areas — hallways, dining, and a resident room — and use your senses.
Safety
Check emergency call systems, secured entrances, handrails, and evacuation plans.
Family communication
Ask how and how often the team updates families about health changes.
Pricing transparency
Get base rent, care-level pricing, fees, and deposits in writing.
Move-in process
Understand the assessment, paperwork, and timeline required to move in.
If care needs increase
Confirm whether the community can keep your loved one as needs grow, and what happens if not.
Trust the tour
Brochures and websites only tell part of the story. On a visit, notice whether residents look engaged and well cared for, whether staff greet people by name, how the community smells and sounds, and whether the team answers hard questions directly. Visit more than once, at different times of day if you can.
